Tony Gunawan – Legendary Badminton Doubles Champion

Tony Gunawan (Indonesian: Tony Gunawan, born April 9, 1975) is a former Indonesian men’s badminton doubles player. Representing Indonesia, he won the men’s doubles gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the 2001 BWF World Championships. After immigrating to the United States, he claimed the men’s doubles title again at the 2005 BWF World Championships. He later established a badminton academy in the U.S. and served as a coach for Japan’s TONAMI Transport in 2017.

Gunawan partnered with Candra Wijaya to secure the Olympic gold in 2000 and with Halim Haryanto to win the World Championships in 2001. Believing he had given his all to Indonesia after these achievements, he decided to immigrate to the United States for his family’s future. For two years following his move, he barely participated in any competitions.

In 2005, when the BWF World Championships were held in the U.S., Gunawan teamed up with Howard Bach to represent America and unexpectedly clinched the title. This marked the first world championship gold in U.S. history, making him the first player ever to win world doubles titles for two different countries. In November 2005, he partnered with Cheng Wen-hsing of Taiwan to win the mixed doubles title at the Chinese Taipei Open.

Gunawan became a U.S. citizen in 2011 after passing the citizenship test, enabling him to represent the U.S. at the London Olympics.
