On October 22, Beijing time, the 2023 Denmark Open concluded with the Chinese national badminton team securing an impressive haul of four gold and one silver medals. The team claimed victories in the men’s singles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles events.
In a standout performance, China’s rising men’s singles star Weng Hongyang swept past Malaysian top player Lee Zii Jia in the final to claim his first-ever BWF Super 750 title. The men’s singles final was the day’s highlight match. After an initial tight contest, Weng capitalized on his opponent’s frequent errors to take the first game 21:12. He maintained momentum in the second game, dominating with a 21:6 victory. Weng’s path to the title included victories over world No. 2 Indonesian star Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and the defending champion, Chinese top men’s player Shi Yuqi, making this gold medal particularly significant. The Chinese mixed pair Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping also achieved a breakthrough victory. They defeated world No. 1 Chinese duo Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong in a three-game final, claiming their first Super 750 title as a partnership. Having finished as runners-up in last year’s Denmark Open, Huang Dongping reflected on their growth through challenges over the past year, emphasizing their focus on performing well in each Olympic qualification match ahead. China secured two straight-set victories in the women’s finals. Top women’s singles player Chen Yufei defeated Spanish veteran Carolina Marín 2:0, while world No. 1 women’s doubles pair Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan beat Japanese duo Chiharu Shida and Nami Matsuyama 2:0, becoming the first pair to successfully defend their Denmark Open title. The men’s doubles gold went to Malaysian pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, who defeated Indonesian duo Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin 2:0. As a high-level Olympic qualification event in the second half of the year, the Denmark Open attracted China’s full-strength team aiming to accumulate ranking points. The Chinese team will next compete in the French Open scheduled for October 24-29.
